Our Goals

Women in Tech, Nottingham (WiT Notts) aims to encourage more women and gender minorities into technology and act as a gateway to other meetups and events. Anyone can attend, regardless of the gender they identify with.

WiT Notts provides a comfortable and safe space where people in the field of technology can socialise, network and learn. Members can come to see talks, partake in workshops and activities and meet other people in our wonderful field. We encourage our members to present at our events, providing them with as much support as they need to do so.

What to expect at WiT Notts

audience.jpg

At Women in Tech, Nottingham, our aim is to have a safe, welcoming and inclusive event. Whether you’ve been coming for years or this is your first event, it’s important to us that you have a positive and enjoyable experience.

We know that it’s not always easy to attend a new event, especially if you’re coming by yourself. With this in mind, on this page, you can find helpful information about the event to make your visit as stress-free as possible. So that everyone has a good time, we encourage you to read our code of conduct. If at any time you feel this has been breached, please contact a member of the team (we’re easy to find as we wear WiT Notts t-shirts and hoodies) or email safety@technottingham.com.

Our event is inclusive and open to anyone who wants to attend. Over time, our audience has become more diverse but there are still ways to go to make it more so. If at any time, you experience issues with any form of exclusion, please let us know safety@technottingham.com. Your feedback is not only welcome but vital to help create an inclusive event.

Getting yourself event ready

We provide name tags to make it easier to learn everyone’s names (and also avoid the anxiety of trying to introduce someone whose name you forgot - we’ve all been there!). Write your name and add a Twitter handle if you like. If you’ve not been before, add a star sticker to your name tag. This helps the team and attendees spot newbies and make sure they’re looked after and introduced to other attendees.

You can also add a pronoun sticker (if we have them in stock!). We encourage the use of pronoun stickers for all attendees as it can make non-cis people feel like they are not being separately labelled, but you are not required to wear a sticker. We do ask, however, that you are mindful of the pronouns of others and address them by the pronoun on the sticker.

You may also wish to add a communication sticker. These indicate to your fellow attendees whether you’re comfortable to be engaged in conversation or whether you’d prefer to be the one that initiates.

Once you’ve got yourself a name label, feel free to help yourself to a drink. There is a range of non-alcoholic drinks and water available throughout the night. Help yourself to swag too - we have stickers galore!

a Women in Tech Online Safe Space

We know that sometimes it’s beneficial to have a safe space to discuss things in an environment with people facing the same struggles as you - therefore we have created a private Slack channel exclusively for women and non-binary folk. You can read more about this in our blog post Gender-specific Spaces in Tech- why do they exist and are they helpful?

To join, the only requirement is if your gender identity is non-binary or female. It's completely up to you if you'd like to to become a member of the channel. Sign up to Slack here if you haven’t already then simply message Anna, Carol or LouiseHi, I meet the joining requirements for the women in tech safe space channel and I would like an invite!“ and you’ll be added to the channel no questions asked. This is to make sure that everyone joining understands this is a safe space with a deliberately limited audience.
